Better Call Saul Uno Recap S1:E1

This is the first episode of the widely anticipated series Better Call Saul which is a spin off from the popular series Breaking Bad.  In Breaking Bad a lawyer named Saul Goodman is hired by Walter White AKA Heisenberg and Jesse Pinkman to represent them several times and to get them out of trouble.  His slogan is Better Call Saul.

In the first episode of Better Call Saul called Uno, the show starts out in black and white.  Saul is working in a Cinnabon shop in the mall under the name Gene.  He spots a man who appears to be watching him.  He becomes nervous as the man walks his way.  The man continues passed him and greets a woman in the mall.  Saul is now seen in his condo drinking whiskey and watching T.V.  Saul goes to a hidden compartment under the sink and grabs a VHS tape.  As he watches the VHS tape it plays several commercials that Saul made as one of the most notorious defense attorneys.

The scene fades back to a courtroom full of impatient people.  The entire courtroom is silent as they wait.  Missing from the court room is Jimmy McGill the defense attorney who will eventually be named Saul Goodman.  Jimmy prepares himself in the bathroom.  When Jimmy returns he launches a very ridiculous but great attempt at convincing the jury that his three clients who are 19 were out of there minds, young and should be given leniency.  After several minutes of defending there actions, the prosecutor plays a video of the three boys defiling the corpse at a funeral home they broke into.  Saul leaves the court to collect his money and it upset because he was given 700 dollars instead of the 2100 he expected because he tried all three clients together.  He vows to never do public defender work again.

As Jimmy is leaving the courthouse he learns he will have to pay money to leave since he doesn't have enough validation stickers to cover the entire payment.  The attendant for the parking lot is none other than Mike Ehrmantraut who will become Sauls private investigator.

Jimmy meets with two potential clients County Treasurer Craig Kettleman and his wife, Betsy.  Craig Kettleman is being accused of stealing 1.6 million dollars.  After some fast talking Jimmy has convinced Craig to hire him as a lawyer.  As Craig begins to sign his wife Betsy convinces him to sleep on it.

Jimmy doesn't want to give up on the Kettlemans.  He decides to order flowers.  While ordering flowers Jimmy turns a corner where he strikes a skateboarded named Cal.  The twin brother of the skateboarder named Lars comes running and says he has it all on film.  They want 500 bucks to not call the cops.  Jimmy sees through the scam and scares the boys away.

Jimmy returns to his office which is a tiny room in a Vietnamese nail salon.  The owner is not very nice to Jimmy.  Jimmy sees a stack of overdue bills and an envelope from Hamlin, Hamlin and McGill.  The envelope contains a check for 26,000 dollars to which Jimmy gets angry and tears up.  Jimmy goes to Hamlin, Hamlin and McGill law firm.  He bust into a conference and interrupts.  He demands to know why he was sent a check.  They tell him that the check was meant for his brother Chuck who is a partner.  Jimmy insist that they buy his share of the firm for 17 million but they refuse and tell Jimmy that his brother is just on an extended sabbatical.  As Jimmy leaves he sees the Kettlemans entering the room and leaves disappointed.

Jimmy returns to Chuck's home.  He puts all of his electronics including his cell phone in the mailbox.  Chuck has an ailment where electromagnetism effects him.  Once inside it is revealed that the house is very strange.  A cooler with ice is used as a refrigerator, there are no electrical lights and no electronics.  It's obvious that Chuck cant be around any electricity.  Jimmy tries to convince Chuck that he should cash out.  Chuck says that he will be returning to work at some point and doesn't want to cash out.  He also ask Jimmy to stop using McGill on his promotional match books as it causes confusion with the firm.  Jimmy gets upset and ask who side is he on.

Jimmy comes up with an idea.  He wants to scam Betsy Kettleman with the help of the twin brothers.  Jimmy tracks down Cal and Lars and convinces them that he will pay them 2000 dollars to help stage an accident with Betsy.  After planning everything out, the brothers get in position and wait for Jimmy to call when Betsy is leaving.  The station wagon leaves and Jimmy calls the brothers.  They follow through with the plan except that the station wagon doesn't stop.  It is a hit and run.  The brothers alert Jimmy that it was a hit and run and that they are following the van.  Jimmy is excited because a hit and run is a felony and likely to make them more money.  The brothers follow the station wagon until it returns to a home that is not Betsy Kettlemans.  An older Hispanic lady exits the vehicle.  Cal fakes a hurt leg while Lars demands money.  The lady not speaking any English, directs the boys to come in the house.

Jimmy scans the area looking for the brothers.  He spots the station wagon and the skateboard gear.  When Jimmy reaches the house he knocks on the door.  The door opens and he is greeted by a gun in the face.  The man pulls Jimmy inside the house.  The head looks out the door and it is Tuco Salamanca from Breaking Bad.
